Yanbian Overseas Chinese Burn Hospital (est. 1991) located in Yanji, the capital city of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, is a medical institute with integrated medical treatment and scientific research. It enjoys fame within the Yanbian Prefecture, Jilin province and China for, “creating a miracle in treating burns and external illness,” as claimed by leading medical experts, scholars and society. Clinically, the Hospital mainly applies the Zhenshi series of traditional Chinese medicines (including Zhenshi Burn Ointment, Zhenshi Shengji Ointment, Zhenshi Quban ointment and Chuangyang ointment) to treat burns, electric injuries, chemical burns, frostbites, external wounds, non-healing of surgical wounds and various acute and chronic ulcers. The medicine was developed by the founder of the hospital, Jiang Huifen. She is of Chinese descent, was raised in Thailand, and then returned to China and went on to become a nationally renowned TCM expert in external treatment, through the clinical practice of more than 30 years. |

Still not content with its achievements, the hospital is actively involved in academic exchange, research and development of new medicines. The hospital now cooperates with dozens of medical institutes for scientific research, training and review of results. “Research on Treating Deep Second and Third Degree Burns with Zhenshi Burn Ointment (original name: Shengjihufu Burn Ointment)”, is a compilation of research which was conducted independently by the hospital, was listed as one of the Key Scientific Research Topics by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (during the period of the Eighth “Five-Year” project). The topic won the hospital first prize for Important New Technology in 1995, awarded by Jilin Provincial TCM Administration. Zhenshi Burn ointment has obtained national patent (No. ZL 97 1 18814 .9) and a Certificate of New Medicine with National Permission (National Drug No. Z20010050). It will soon be manufactured by Aodong Pharmaceuticals Co. Ltd, Jilin. Its upcoming national distribution release will relieve the suffering of many burn and scald patients. Currently, under the guidance of a new director, Chen Bin, the hospital is utilizing new praiseworthy service including hotel-like accommodation, strict management, modern technology, and many services to provide the best treatment to all the patients receiving clinical treatment with the Zhenshi medicines in this unique clinical setting that is now provided. The Zhenshi Series of External Medicines
Background Information
TCM preparations for external use— The Zhenshi Series of external ointments, were developed by the founder of Yanbian Overseas Chinese Burn Hospital, Director Dr. Jiang Huifen. She is of Chinese descent, was raised in Thailand, and then returned to China. She has gone on to become a nationally renowned TCM expert in external treatment through the clinical practice of more than 30 years, based on the secret prescription that has been kept in her family for generations.
Up to date, tens of thousands of victims of burns, scalds, frostbites, bed sores, diabetes, dermal and soft tissue ulceration, and other skin ulcers, have been healed with these medicines. The medicines are well-known for their curative effect, pain relief, anti-inflammatory action, prevention and elimination of infection, removal of necrotic tissue, assistance in the re-growth of new tissue and prevention of scars. Approved by the Health Office of Jilin Province in 1993, Yanbian Overseas Chinese Burn Hospital started developing and researching Zhenshi Burn Ointment (TCM Category III) in accordance with the NMAO regulations, “Principles of approving New Medicines”.
Beginning in January 1993, the basic research was completed in 2 years and then reported to the Drug Assessment Center, of the Ministry of Health. In July, 1998, Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, No. 314 PLA Hospital, Heilongjiang Provincial Hospital, the First Clinical Hospital of Haerbin Medical University and Jilin Provincial Hospital, mutually participated in the second stage of clinical testing with 408 cases being treated with Zhenshi Burn Ointment. The results were reported to the State Drug Administration. In May 2001, the Certificate of New Medicine and approval documents for mass production were achieved.

The following data is abstracted from the second-stage of clinical reporting conducted by the Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, No. 304 PLA Hospital, Heilongjiang Provincial Hospital, No.1 Haerbin Medical University Affiliated Hospital and Jilin People’s Hospital.
The Study:
Zhenshi Burn Ointment is used, compared with a reference group, on the treatment of second degree burns.
Statistical Analysis:
There is a significant difference in the for the recovery rate shown after 6 days and for the total recovery time between Zhenshi and the reference group, P value < 0.001; For VAS scores on the 5th day, the groups had obvious differences which showed that the test group made superior progress over the reference group.
